Part the Fifth

Well, with not only a dead bell-ringer on their hands but also a ten-ton bell lying on the sidewalk,what were they to do?  The Archbishop, was close to despair!  How, he wondered in anguish, could anyone ring the bell, when the bell was no longer in the belfry?

The only option was to advertise the job once again and hope for the best.  And this time the only job applicant was an odd-looking longhaired young man carrying a musical instrument case strapped across his shoulders.

"How can you do the job?” asked the Archbishop.  “Our wonderful bell is lying in the street!”

“Do not worry, replied the young man, for I have a solution.”

Filled with curiosity, the Archbishop followed the young man high into the belfry and watched as he removed his instrument from its case.  With ease, the young man slung a leather strap across his shoulders, twisted some tuning knobs until the strings were just right, and strummed the instrument with great force. 

And to the amazement of the Archbishop, a miracle occurred:  the completely unmistakable and surpassingly beautiful music of a bell suddenly filled the sky above San Giovanni.

“You’re hired,” shouted the Archbishop over the din of the glorious tones, and for weeks the most incredible sounds delighted the people -- until one day, quite by accident, the young man accidentally took four paces backward and fell out the side of the bell tower and plunged to his death upon the pavement below.

A crowd gathered ‘round; a policeman came; the Archbishop padded out to see what was the commotion. 

Looking up, the policeman asked, "Do you know this man’s name?"

And the Archbishop replied ….
