Pink Palace & Peabody

Kim and Karen and Lynette also visited the Pink Palace, built by Clarence Saunders, a famous Memphis entrepreneur from long ago.  In 1916, about a year before Freddie was born, Saunders invented the supermarket right here in Memphis, Tennessee.  It was the first grocery store in which patrons took a shopping cart and walked through the aisles filling their baskets with goods from shelves, and then checked out at a cash register.  The concept of the "Self-Serving Store" was patented by Saunders in 1917.

So he got rich and he built a big house of pink Italian marble.  Then he went bust and the city of Memphis took over the place and turned it into a museum, which is what it still is today.

Kim and Karen and Lynette went downtown to see the famous fountain in the lobby of the Peabody Hotel.  There it is, but don't we need some ducks for decoration?

Ah.
